LIFE NEW HYTS partner Hysolar will be officially certified for the production and distribution of sustainable hydrogen in accordance with the European Renewable Energy Directive at the beginning of 2026.
Green hydrogen
Green hydrogen is produced by splitting pure water using green electricity. This green hydrogen enables zero emissions: no CO2, nitrogen, or particulate matter emissions throughout the entire chain from production to use.
Since its foundation in 2019, Hysolar/Greenpoint has been committed to the production and supply of green hydrogen. Since 2024, the green hydrogen has been produced in the electrolyzer at KWR in Nieuwegein. The green hydrogen is transported via a 1-kilometer underground pipeline to the Hysolar/Greenpoint hydrogen filling station, located on the premises of construction company Jos Scholman.
EU regulations
When can hydrogen officially be labeled as "green"? The European Renewable Energy Directive provides the framework for this. It describes in detail when hydrogen can be classified as RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin). For example, very specific rules have been laid down regarding the location and time at which the green electricity required for hydrogen production is generated. This is one of the components of a comprehensive certification process: "There is a lot involved," says project leader Dik Raadgever, "in addition to a detailed electricity contract, requirements have been set for the measuring instruments in our installation, the structure of our organization, and the software we have developed for monitoring and reporting all data."
In the spring of 2025, Hysolar/Greenpoint put together an internal project team of specialists to prepare for certification. Because the rules are still so new, RVO (the Netherlands Enterprise Agency) provided support in the form of an external consultant. "That certainly helped. In addition, we were able to make good use of our own experience with certifying green fuels," says Joan van Kessel, co-shareholder of Hysolar/Greenpoint.
